3 Tips for Buying Firewood in Columbus, OH

Columbus is a beautiful place to live, but our winters sure are cold! You don’t want to sit inside with the heat turned way up all season long, though. Build yourself a fire! Fires are a great way to stay warm, feel festive, save electricity, and more. It even gives you a yummy way to make dinner! But where do you get your firewood from? You certainly won’t go chop down a tree yourself! In fact, even if you were able and willing to do this, it would not be a great idea because the wood needs to dry out for a while before being burned. This “green” wood needs to sit out for about six to nine months to be rid of all moisture. That’s not going to work!

This means you’ll be buying it. Whether you’re looking for wood to burn in a fireplace, wood stove, or backyard fire pit, here’s what to keep in mind before you buy your firewood:

Learn what a “cord” is.

Firewood is sold by the cord, which may be a term you are not familiar with. Buying firewood by the stack of wood is 8 ft. long x 4 ft. deep x 4 ft. high. This is roughly 128 cubic ft., and equals a full cord. A face cord is one-third of a full cord, meaning it is a single stack that measures 4 ft. high by 4 ft. long.

Know how much space you have to store the firewood.

You don’t want wood piling up all over your house! While it is tempting to buy firewood in bulk to get a better deal and to have enough to last all year, it is important to be realistic about how much storage space you have.
It’s best to store it with plenty of space between the logs to allow drying and prevent rotting, so you cannot shove it all in as tightly as possible. Also, you can’t count storage space anywhere near your house or garage. This is a recipe for disaster in regards to mice, insects, and fire danger.

Different fires require different types of wood.

For an indoor fireplace or wood stove, you should be buying firewood that is dense. Oak and maple are great for these fires. If you’re going to burn the wood in an outdoor fire pit, it doesn’t matter as much what type of wood it is. Maple and fruitwoods are great for cooking fires because they infuse the food with a pleasant flavor. Softer wood, such as poplar, burns faster and doesn’t make a long-lasting fire, so keep that in mind when purchasing.
