3 Signs Your Trees Need Trimming

Summer is here at last! Our fierce Ohio winter gave way to spring and a lot of new, fresh growth. A few months later, all of that growth has really taken off… in fact, there may be a little bit too much growth now! Is it time to cut your trees back? It’s very possible that it is. Here are a few signs to look for in order to know for sure:

#1 You see signs of disease. This is number one on the list, because if you see signs of disease, your tree trimming service absolutely cannot wait. It needs to be mitigated as quickly as possible. What you are looking for is any type of discoloration, premature falling, and fungal growth. If you see something that looks like powdery mildew on leaves and the diseased branches aren’t cut off, it could spread to neighboring trees. As well, a sick tree is a dangerous tree. The tree’s branches could become so sick and weak they fall to the ground on their own.

#2 It’s growing over a dangerous or inconvenient area. There are a variety of benefits of shade trees on your property, but you don’t want them everywhere. If it’s providing too much shade over your pool, for example, you’ll want these extra branches trimmed back so you can sunbathe again. If you have a thick, heavy branch growing over your roof, screen, porch, or fence, it’s only a matter of time before a fierce wind comes along and you have major damage. It could be growing into a powerline, in front of a stop sun, or somewhere that is downright dangerous.

#3 The tree is only a few years old. You may think only old, fully-grown trees need to be trimmed but this is not true. Starting the tree trimming process early in the tree’s life, in about year two or three, can help to ensure that it grows properly. Your young tree should have a solid, dominant trunk as well as limbs that are spaced evenly. When there are codominant trunks or heavy limbs growing on one side and not the other, it affects not only the overall shape of the tree but also long-term safety. Hiring a tree trimming service when a tree is young will help it develop into a sturdy, beautifully shaped tree that you can enjoy for many years to come.
