Landscape Design 101: Ideas and Best Practices

Winter is finally starting to fade and spring is arriving in it’s place. With the warmer weather comes the time-honored tradition of spring cleaning. While you may think of spring cleaning as just tidying up your garage and putting your sweaters back in storage, your backyard needs some love during this time too. Backyard spring cleaning helps you prepare for outdoor entertaining (one of the best parts of the warmer months!), makes your yard more enjoyable, and is an essential part of preparing for your garden planting.

Spring is the perfect time to brush up on your landscaping skills and get your yard looking as good as possible. With the fierce Ohio winter behind you, get outside and get beautifying! Just make sure you stick to a few simple best practices to keep your property looking top notch:

#1 Use the right equipment
Small equipment changes can actually make a big impact on the look and health of your lawn. One big mistake you want to avoid is using the wrong equipment for each task. For example, many people fall into the trap of using a regular lawn mower to edge sidewalks and curbs. Instead, use a stick edger to keep from creating those unsightly missed spots a large mower can leave behind.

#2 Limit fertilization
Having greener, healthier turf is just one of the benefits of applying fertilizer to your yard. But too often, people over do it. Fertilizer raises the amounts of nitrogen in your soil, and too much of it can damage or even kill your grass. Often referred to as fertilizer burn by landscaping professionals, having too much can cause yellow, brown or dead sections of grass. Make sure that you follow the instructions on the bag and don’t use too much or do it when the grass will be dry.

#3 Shape shrubs for sunlight
Well-trimmed hedges can add structure to your landscape, but they need to be properly pruned to give you the best results. A dead shrub doesn’t look good for very long, no matter how neat the shape is. Prune your hedges in the shape of a trapezoid to allow light to penetrate to the lowest foliage. The smaller width should be on top, with a wider base, instead of the other way around.

#4 Trim your trees
Spring means time to trim your trees around your property. Regular tree trimming can prevent property damage as well as injuries to you and your family. Dead tree branches run the risk of falling off onto anything below it: your roof, your car, or even a person.

While it’s very important, this tree trimming is dangerous, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. It’s not as simple as just mowing the lawn or planting a few flowers, so you shouldn’t attempt to do it alone! Bring in the experts at Land Pro Landscaping to help with all of your tree care needs. We serve Columbus, Akron, Kent, Mogadore, and the rest of Ohio.
