#1 Don’t mow your grass too short. Taller blades of grass result in deeper, stronger roots and provide more shade for your lawn’s root system, which keeps it cooler during hot summer days. In order to best achieve this, put your lawn mower on a high setting and leave the grass around three inches high.

#2 The key is water, water, water! When you’re hot you need water, and your grass is no different. This doesn’t necessarily mean constant watering, though. Water your lawn deeply once or twice a week. One to one-and-a-half inches of water a week, at about 5 am, will keep your lawn green.

#3 Lay down fertilizer. Fertilize your lawn every six weeks. A lower nitrogen content fertilizer is often the right choice, just be sure you apply the fertilizer evenly and with good judgement. Too much fertilizer can turn the turf brown and give you the exact opposite result you are looking for.
