7 Easy Spring Landscaping Tips

Spring is finally here! While we are certainly thankful the snow and cold winds are gone, the warm temperature means there is a lot to do outside in your yard again. Akron, OH spring landscaping can include any or all of the following:

#1 Inspect your trees and shrubs. Start with a thorough inspection of your entire yard. Look for any branches that might be broken or damaged during the winter snowfalls and either prune the branches or have the whole tree removed, whichever is needed.

#2 Test your soil. Next, test your soil to make sure it has the proper pH balance and mix of nutrients. If your soil does need nutrients, make sure you choose a fertilizer that matches those needs.

#3 Fertilize the lawn. The decision about whether or not to fertilize should be based on the nutrition requirements needed by your soil conditions, which you tested above. In general, it is best to choose a slow-release fertilizer to reduce possible losses to the environment and increase nutrient absorption. In some situations, it may help to use “organic materials” to improve the health of your soil instead of store-bought chemicals.

#4 Fertilize your trees and shrubs as well. Most plants, like your yard’s trees, flowers, and shrubs, will benefit from proper fertilization. Just lay down a slow-release product just before new flower bed mulch is applied.

#5 Make your flower beds neat and tidy. Rake the old leaves and debris from your flower beds and create neat, natural edges by using an edging tool. Add an inch-thick layer of fresh mulch in plant beds and around trees. This not only makes the whole area look neat, but also helps to retain moisture in the soil, keeps roots cool in the summer, and insulates them in the winter.

#6 Pull the Weeds. Spring means weeds! Now is a good time to apply pre-emergent weed control for these pests. Crabgrass weed preventer is particularly popular and needed in our area of the country.

#7 Inspect your irrigation system. If you have one, it is now time to turn on your irrigation system and inspect it to see if it is still in working condition. If you have a broken piece, call a company to come out and fix it.

This is only the beginning! Spring is beautiful, but also quite busy with all of these outdoor chores that need to be done in order to keep your property looking its best. Does it seem like too much?
